Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the ability to question certain decisions from the official, following the practice currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
