The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

This encompassed attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's ruling was the potential of the former president's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a record of organizing to request asylum through a embassy office", a statement said.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to kill the current president and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.
