A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the year before. This venture was closely associated with his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed pending a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic projects.
