A Heap of Japanese Animation Updates Landed Over the Festive Season

The Yuletide season offer a multitude of pastimes far superior than scanning the headlines: discovering surprises, getting stuffed on holiday treats, and employing meditation skills to avoid snapping at loved ones. I hope you managed to do all these things and more. Nevertheless, the entertainment world doesn't go on vacation, and this is notably true for the realm of anime. Many noteworthy developments came out during the break, and if you didn't see any, here is a roundup of the biggest bits.

One-Punch Man Season 3 Is Set to Continue (In 2027)

Perhaps the biggest piece of news, the notorious controversial season that was season 3 of One-Punch Man failed to deter further production. The show will return with a subsequent part in 2027—such a distant date they might as well have called it season 4. More surprisingly, animation studio J.C. Staff will remain leading the project. On a positive note this time, helmer Shinpei Nagai is set to direct from the outset, which might be a positive development. But, the main art for the continuation is a mirror of the one used for season 3, just with characters Saitama and Garou oriented differently. This makes me think that, by now, they are probably trolling the fans.

Ruri Dragon Is Set to Be the First Shonen Jump Anime From Kyoto Animation

Kyoto Animation has built a reputation for being an prestigious animation studio, setting itself apart not just for the superb artistry of its output but for the ethical practices of its employees—a sadly unusual standard in the industry. Surprisingly, until now, it had not adapted an anime stemming from a manga published in Shonen Jump, possibly the most famous magazine in the field. Ruri Dragon will end that streak, and what a superb choice it is. The manga by Masaoki Shindo gained massive popularity when it launched in 2022 after just a small number of issues, but then went into a extended pause due to the author's health issues. When it came back with a reduced workload, the series proved it hadn't lost the fans' support and positive sentiment, and now everyone is overjoyed about the forthcoming KyoAni adaptation.

Kingdom Season 6 Is Getting a Follow-Up In Production

Kingdom is the highly popular, decades-spanning Shueisha manga that is aside from One Piece. If you've never heard of it before, it's because it only recently got an English localization, but the anime has been airing for some time, and season 6 was a further excellent entry. As it happens that was just the first cour, because a "sequel" has been announced as in development, and it will probably air in 2026.

Science Saru Is Bringing A Witch in Mongolia To Anime

A further studio known for the artistic merit of its projects, Science Saru has given us hit shows of the quality of Space Dandy, Devilman Crybaby, and, more recently, Dandadan. This time, the studio will be producing the adaptation of Tomato Soup's manga A Witch's Life in Mongol, based on the actual historical person of Fatima, an influential woman and thinker in the Mongol Empire in the 13th century. Based on the trailer, the anime named Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia will have a highly unique and captivating visual style, which evokes Ranking of Kings. Scheduled to launch in July 2026, this one will definitely be on my must-watch list.

Tougen Anki Will Continue With a Second Season

Immediately following the conclusion of its twenty-fourth episode, it was confirmed that Tougen Anki will be securing a sequel. Adapted from the Japanese legend of Momotaro, Tougen Anki adapts the manga by Yura Urushibara. The new season of the anime will adapt the Nikko Kegon Falls Arc, but a firm air date has yet to be revealed.
